Chrysantha Wijeyasinga was born in centuries-old Kandy, the capital of Ceylon until 1815. The artist grew up in Colombo, today's capital of Sri Lanka.

His parents, though of ethnic difference, were of the same Catholic faith.
His father, the eldest of eight siblings, came from a Singhalese family of jewelry makers, his grandfather a Buddhist and a Pali scholar. Chrysantha's Tamil mother came from a long line of estate owners in tea and rubber.

Chrysantha was in high school when civil turmoil engulfed the Island Nation. His father sought immigration to an English country and to continue his medical practice.

The family settled in the USA. Chrysantha met shocking racial prejudice. This swayed him to fasten his identity to his family culture; and learn from ancient traditions.
